Whalebone letter opener. Gift: Norman Bassett.

Hawthorne used this letter opener while he was surveyor at the Salem Customs House; subse-quently, he gave it to a clerk there, Zachariah Burchmore. The item eventually found its way to the College to commemorate the centennial of Hawthorne’s Class of 1825. all text © Bowdoin College, 2009.
