According to Rita Gollin, this is the "[f]irst known engraved portrait" and "was commissioned by Ticknor and Company, who published it as the frontispiece to their two-volume revised edition of Twice-told Tales, issued 8 March 1851" (32). Gollin also notes that "[p]rints[were]given to Hawthorne's friends, including Melville" (32).
