|One of three photographs done by J.J.E. Mayall in London on 19 May, 1860,called the "Holden" pose, p. 62, Portraits of Nathaniel Hawthorne: An Iconography by Rita Gollin (courtesy of Northern Illinois UP)|
According to Rita Gollin, the "identification [of this photograph] as the "Holden" photograph, [is] a consequence of the mistaken assumption promoted by Holden himself that the image remained unknown for twenty-six years until he 'unearthed' it. But the image had not been buried, at least not at the beginning of its existence" (63).
