|3/4 pose photograph of Nathaniel Hawthorne, the "Bright-Motley" pose, by J.J.E. Mayall p. 56 of Portraits of Nathaniel Hawthorne by Rita Gollin (courtesy of Northern Illinois UP)|
Rita Gollin explains that Hawthorne acquiesced to the request by Henry Arthur Bright, a friend, to sit for the photographer J.J.E. Mayall on 19 May 1860 in London (52). Of the three photographs taken, Bright selected this one, which was later referred to as the "Motley" photograph. Gollin says that Sophia wrote to Bright in August of 1864 asking that he send her this photograph, which he did (55).
