Detail of the Right Border of the Isaac Spofford Gravestone, 1786, Beverly, Massachusetts. Slate.

The Spofford Stone was made by Thomas Park of Groton, Massachusetts. The carving in the photograph reveals the exceptional talent of this well-known stonecutter and the symbolic language often used on early New England gravestones.
