A past President of the Nathaniel Hawthorne Society, he currently serves as its Treasurer. He is the author of Aesthetic Headaches: Women and a Masculine Poetics in Poe, Melville, and Hawthorne (1988), co-editor with Robert K. Martin of Roman Holidays: American Writers and Artists in Nineteenth-Century Italy (2002) and of a special issue of ESQ on the Hawthorne-Melville relationship. His book Henry James and the Suspense of Masculinity will be published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2003. He is currently editing a critical edition of The Scarlet Letter and Selected Tales for W. W. Norton.
