My name is Barry Smith
and I am a member of the Friends of Kensal Green Cemetery, working to restore
and preserve the Cemetery of All Souls, Kensal Green, London. You can see more
of our work on our website: www.kensalgreen.co.uk.
We are fortunate to have within the cemetery the graves of both Sofia and Una Hawthorne,
wife and daughter of the great Nathaniel Hawthorne.
The grave is in reasonable condition although it has been damaged in some parts by an enormous Hawthorn tree which, although now practically horizontal, is still thriving.
We are seeking modest contributions from interested parties in both this country and the United States to enable a limited restoration of the grave to take place. This would involve light cleaning of the headstone and the kerbstone around the grave, the pruning of the tree by experts at the appropriate time of year and the re-installation of the headstone to Una
Hawthorne, which has been pushed out of alignment by the tree.
Anyone willing to help finance the work on this important grave, and should
contact me at KENSALG@aol.com? To complete
the job properly we are looking for a sum between US$4,000 and 5,000, quite
a modest price to help preserve this sacred historical site.
