Excerpt from The Scarlet Letters Angry Eagle and the Salem Custom House by Hugh Dawson

Excerpt from "The Scarlet Letter's Angry Eagle and the Salem Custom House" by Hugh Dawson, published in the Essex Institute Historical Collection, January 1986, vol. 122, pp. 30-34 (courtesy of the Peabody Essex Museum)

In this excerpt Dawson notes "inexplicable inaccuracies in the description of Joseph True's reworking of the national symbol given in "The Custom House'" and goes on to observe that "the authorial pretense to imperfect recollection served his subordination of fact to satire" (34).
