1502 Witchcraft and Chillingworth

Each of the four main characters has a distinct connection with witchcraft. Chillingworth, like Hibbins, has been involved with English witches or "conjurers," and there seems to be little question that he himself is a witch because of his magical potions and his friendship with Indian sorcerers. The narrator says of him:
There was something ugly and evil in his face.... According to the vulgar idea, the fire in his laboratory had been brought from the lower regions, and was fed with infernal fuel .... It grew to be a widely diffused opinion that the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale ... was haunted either by Satan himself, or Satan's emissary, in the guise of old Roger Chillingworth. (126)
