EXCERPTS FROM THE Indian Deed to Salem, 1686

"-Know ye--That we ye above said David Nonnuphanohow, Sam Wuttaanoh, John Tontohqunne, Cicely's son, Cicely Petaghuncksq, Sarah Wuttaquatinnusk, Thomas Ukqueakussennum, alias Captain Thom, James Quanophkownatt, alias James Rumney Marsh, Israell Quanophkownatt, Joane Quanophkownatt, Yawataw, Wattawtinnusk--For and in consideration of ye full & just summe of twenty pounds, currant money of New England, to them in hand, at & before ye ensealing and delivery of these presents, by John Ruck, John Higginson, Samuel Gardner, Timothy Lindall, William Hirst, Israel Porter, Selectmen and Trustees for the Town of Salem in ye County of Essex within his Majesties territory and dominion of New England in America, will and truly paid, the receipt whereof, they do hereby acknowledge, and themselves therewith to be fully satisfied and contented. . . . " "--All ye said Township of Salem, viz: all that tract and parcell of land, lying to ye westward of Neumkeage River, alias Bassriver, whereupon ye Town of Salem is built, so proceeding along to ye head of Neumkeage River, called by ye English, Bassriver, so comprehending all ye land belonging to the Township of Salem according as it is butted and bounded with and upon ye towns of Beverly, Wenham, Topsfield, Redding, Linne and Marblehead, down to ye sea - which said land is a part of what belonged to the ancestors of ye granters and is their proper inheritance or howsoever ye said Township or any part or parcell thereof is butted and bounded, or reputed to be bounded together with all houses, edifices, buildings, lands, yards, orchards, gardens, meadows, marshes. feeding grounds, rocks, stones, beach, flats, pastures, fences, commons, commons of pasture, woods, underwoods, swamps, waters, watercourses, dams, ponds, headwares, fishings, fowlings, ways, easements, profitts, priviledges, rights, commodityes, emoluments, royaltyes, hereditaments, and appurtenances, whatsoever--as also all mines, mettalls, mineralls, with all islands and priviledges of Neumkeage River alias Bassriver, which the ancestors of said granters heretofore rightfully possessed. . . to be hereby granted & sold unto ye said John Ruck, John Higginson, Samuel Gardner, Timothy Lindall, William Hirst, & Israell Porter, as trustees abovesaid and to their heirs & assignes for ever to and for ye sole use, benefitt and behoof of ye Proprietors in & Purchasers of ye said Township of Salem."
