Adam & Eve Fireback at the House of the Seven Gables Historic Site The story of the seduction of Adam and Eve by
Satan in the Garden of Eden was common knowledge to
residents of Hawthorne's Salem. This fireback
shows the snake entwined about the Tree of Knowledge
of Good and Evil and is a dramatic representation of
the relationship of men and women to evil and to
