- "The Scarlet Letter's
Angry Eagle and the Salem Custom House" by Hugh J. Dawson
Article on the eagle of the Salem Custom House from the January, 1986,
vol. 122 issue of The Essex Institute Historical Collection (courtesy
of the Peabody Essex Museum)
In this article, Hugh Dawson argues that in the first chapter
of The Scarlet Letter, "The Custom-House," Hawthorne uses the Custom
House eagle as part of his satire on the political machine responsible
for his firing from his position as surveyor of the Salem Custom House.
